Rep. Stansbury’s Statement on Release of Chimpanzees from Research Facility

November 13, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) released the following statement after the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced a group of chimpanzees used for research at the Alamogordo Primate Facility (APF) will be released to a sanctuary in Louisiana:

“Today, I am deeply grateful that the National Institutes of Health has announced the release of the Alamogordo primates used in military and health research for decades to a sanctuary to live out the remainder of their lives," said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01).

“A bipartisan delegation of Congressional members, along with myself, have been working for years to secure their release.

“This long overdue step will ensure that these animals can live out the remainder of their lives with dignity and will end a long, painful, and expensive chapter in New Mexico’s history on this issue.”
