Rep. Stansbury's Statement on President Trump’s First Actions as President

February 10, 2025

Trump sets ominous tone for policies on public safety, immigration, the environment

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) released the following statement after President Donald Trump took his first executive actions as President:

“Serving New Mexico and our people will always be my top priority. Even as we face uncertainty in the days ahead, I am dedicated to working across the aisle to ensure we protect our democracy and our rights and ensure that all New Mexicans have the opportunity to thrive.

"As President Trump took his oath of office today I, like many Americans, hoped he would turn the page on the hateful rhetoric and policies that propelled his campaign. Instead, the President outlined a policy agenda designed to divide and stoke fear and will take our country back decades.

"Tonight President Trump signed executive actions removing the U.S. from international climate agreements and the World Health Organization, putting our country and the planet on a perilous path. These orders will advance Trump’s "drill, baby, drill" policies—which he promised to oil and gas executives as he solicited campaign donations. These policies will dismantle years of progress and critical protections for our lands, waters, and communities, and put the profits of large corporations before our people and the planet.

"Trump also advanced policies to crack down on immigration, designed to sew hate and division and make our communities less safe. Promising mass deportations, millions of Americans are living in fear that their families may be separated by policies that separate families, threaten the safety and security of our communities, and potentially violate the Constitution and law. Furthermore, Trump called for a new Manifest Destiny outlining policies that could imperil America's international standing and pardoned January 6th rioters who attacked our nation's Capitol.

"Against this backdrop, Trump promised to dismantle the federal government and diversity initiatives across federal agencies and the military as he invoked the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and policies that were in diametric opposition to the Civil Rights Movement. These policies, coupled with actions undermining the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, will eliminate critical protections and dismantle decades of progress across the country.

"This is not what the American people stand for or voted for. As the newly sworn-in President advances policies endangering our communities and kowtows to his wealthy donors, we will push back with every tool of our democracy. And, our fight for New Mexico and our communities will continue.”
