Rep. Stansbury’s Statement Celebrating Labor Day

September 5, 2022

WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01), a member of the House Labor Caucus, issued the following statement celebrating Labor Day:

“Today on Labor Day, as the daughter of a union strong family and former Operating Engineer and Boilermaker, I am celebrating our workers who are the backbone of our economy. Years of organizing by the labor movement, have given us the eight-hour workday and five-day work week, workplace safety standards, good paying jobs and benefits for many workers and so much more. Just as workers organized before, the labor movement is again galvanizing during this historic moment as we are working to rebuild our nations’ economy and infrastructure.

“I am proud to stand with workers everywhere across the country—from our teachers, firefighters, construction trades and retail workers—such as Starbucks workers organizing today—to the halls of Congress where our staff are organizing to collectively bargain for the first time history. In my own office, I am proud to recognize my staff’s right to unionize and am deeply proud they are among the first seven offices on the Hill to make this announcement. It’s a privilege to stand in solidarity with our workers, and today we double down on our commitment to ensure every worker is paid a living wage, has safe working conditions, and benefits that will allow our families, communities, and economy to thrive.”

Rep. Stansbury recently voted to pass the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which are creating thousands of good-paying, union jobs across New Mexico. She is also a cosponsor of the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act, the Family Medical Leave Modernization Act, a resolution to designate Journeyman Lineworkers Recognition Day, and the Raise the Wage Act of 2021.
