WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) issued the following statement after her bipartisan Promoting Accessibility on Federal Lands Act passed the House of Representatives by unanimous consent as part of the EXPLORE Act:
“I am thrilled that the bipartisan EXPLORE Act finally made its way out of the House by unanimous consent and is now on its way to the Senate, then hopefully President Biden’s desk! But what I’m especially excited for is that this package includes my bill, the Promoting Accessibility on Federal Lands Act. As one of the original sponsors of this bill, I know just how important our land, water, and natural spaces are for so many people. That’s why I joined forces with my colleague, Rep. Ciscomani, on this legislation to make the great outdoors more accessible to all. I’m proud to have carried this bill as it made its way through the House from start to finish.
“This bill directs the Secretaries of Interior and Agriculture to conduct a comprehensive assessment of accessibility options for our trails, campsites, and recreational facilities so that every single person can enjoy the great outdoors. It is now more important than ever to protect our precious land and waters and ensure they are accessible to all, including future generations.
“America’s public lands are for everyone, regardless of race, gender, age, religion, or differing abilities. This legislation will help us find those disparities in accessibility for our public lands and take critical steps towards making our public lands more accessible to all.”
