Rep. Stansbury Votes to Strengthen the Postal Service
The bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 increases transparency, promotes local news, and modernizes employee benefit systems
WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) voted to pass the bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act of 2022, a landmark bill funding the universal mail service provided to households across America, investing in our Postal workers who are the backbone of the Postal Service and strengthening the U.S. Postal Service for generations to come.
The Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 works to save the Postal Service over $49 billion over 10 years through structural benefit reforms, increasing transparency, and facilitating timely mail and package deliveries.
“Today, I am proud to vote in favor of the bipartisan Postal Service Reform Act to support our postal workers and the vital services they provide,” said Rep Stansbury. “Families, households, and businesses across New Mexico—especially in our rural communities—rely on the Postal Service to receive essential news, mail, packages, medications, and so much more. This legislation is essential to reforming and modernizing the United States Postal Service and will help to strengthen this vital agency for years to come so that communities across New Mexico will continue to receive reliable mail services.”
Without reforms, the U.S. Postal Service would likely be unable to fund its operations prior to 2024. The Postal Service Reform Act will eliminate requirements for the agency to prefund retiree health benefits and integrate Medicare into the retirement plan for Postal Service employees.
The Postal Service Reform Act also expands special rates for local newspaper distribution to promote local news organizations, increases transparency, and promotes on-time mail delivery. The legislation requires the Postal Service to develop a public-facing online dashboard with weekly national and local performance data. The legislation also implements a new six-day integrated delivery system to ensure households across the country receive their mail and packages in a timely manner.
