Rep. Stansbury States Plans for Next Congress and Backs New Legislation

December 9, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) held a press call today to discuss her plans for the next Congress and a new bill, the National Resilience and Recovery Fund Act (Polluters Pay Act), which would establish a new trust fund in the tax code called the “National Resilience and Recovery Fund” with funds from taxes levied on corporate polluters.

"The National Resilience and Recovery Fund Act will close those loopholes and tax windfall profits made by price gouging consumers to fund federal community resilience projects and programs across the country,” said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01). “It’s time to reinvest in our communities impacted by climate change. We can’t afford to keep waiting.”

“Right now, there is a clear path to winning the bid to become the next Ranking Member on the U.S House Committee on Natural Resources. I am speaking to Members, Tribes, and leadership to understand the vision that they have for this Committee. I have spent my entire career working at the forefront of issues that impact our communities—and it is important now more than ever to not only have leaders that understand the community's needs but ensure that our institutions elect what the American people want.”

“As we face another Trump presidency in the next chapter, it is crucial that we have leaders who know how legislation can get passed. We need leaders who can work effectively across the aisle, and under my leadership, we will accomplish just that. Project 2025 appointees plan to open Chaco Canyon to oil and gas drilling, which the entire New Mexico delegation has fought against for many years. We need a generational reset, and now is a perfect time to do that--and I am the one that will get the job done.”

“There has never been a woman in leadership in this committee. And right now, I am in listening mode. I am listening to Tribal leaders to understand how communities can be transformed. Before Rep. Raúl Grijalva's (AZ-07) role as Ranking Member on the U.S House Committee on Natural Resources, Rep. Raúl Grijalva (AZ-07) made sure to sit down with Members and listen to their priorities so that the issues they cared about made it into the committee and across the finish line. For me, honoring his historic legacy in this committee is continuing the work that he did while making sure the thoughts, visions, and dreams for the future are reflected.”
