Rep. Stansbury Statement on New Department of Transportation Railroad Rule
WASHINGTON—Today, Rep. Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) issued the following statement after the Department of Transportation announced a new general rule requiring two-person crews on railroads:
"Today’s announcement by the Biden Administration that two-person crews will be required in railroad operations is a crucial step in addressing the catastrophic train derailments that have impacted communities across the United States and New Mexico over the last several years. This rule, like the requirement for two-person crews in my Rail Worker and Community Safety Act, will help save lives. This rule includes key provisions from our bill and addresses a critical issue in federal rail safety regulations, which will enhance the safety of both rail workers and communities.
"For far too long, carriers have put their bottom lines over workers and our communities—leading to the tragedy in East Palestine, as well as the derailment in my own district in Torrance County. Just last week, another derailment occurred in Socorro County in New Mexico, only emphasizing the need for urgent action on rail safety. Protecting our communities from these accidents requires a concerted effort from everyone involved in the rail industry, including federal agencies. I applaud the Administration and the Department of Transportation for its dedication and commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our railways and our people."
