Rep. Stansbury Releases Statement after Supreme Court Issues Blatantly Political Decision

July 1, 2024

Congresswoman champions judicial ethics enforcement through legislation, letter to Republican House leadership

WASHINGTON—U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) released the following statement today after the conservative justices of the United State’s Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in the 6-3 ruling in former President Donald Trump’s immunity case:

"Nothing is more perilous to the future of our democracy than unchecked power. Frighteningly, that is what the conservative majority on the Supreme Court appears to be poised to give Donald Trump today in their Presidential immunity ruling. The Court delayed this decision to the absolute final day of their session, effectively stalling Trump’s prosecution before the 2024 election," said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01).

"No one is above the law. Not a former President, and certainly not the Justices bending the law to meet their political ends. Donald Trump is a convicted felon and serial abuser of Presidential power—who used his office for personal and political gain--and will do the same if elected again, with frightening implications for our democracy.

"In the history of our country, we have never seen a more extreme and political court—conflicted by conservative candidates, donors, and activists. Justice Thomas and Justice Alito should have recused themselves long ago from this and other cases, as it is clear their political activities and those of their spouses and family members violate the most basic tenets of judicial ethics.

"It is now more clear than ever, that oversight of the Supreme Court is necessary to preserve its integrity and restore Americans’ trust in the highest court in the land, which is why I have introduced and cosponsored legislation to reform and overhaul oversight over the Court. We must reform the Court. And we must ensure Trump is held accountable under the law."

Rep. Stansbury is a champion for judicial ethics reform. She filed the Judicial Ethics Enforcement Act earlier this year and is sending a letter to House Republican leadership urging them to take legislative action to protect the country from this activist court.
