Rep. Stansbury Orchestrates Win Over Big Mining Companies
GOP-led push for harmful mining practices fails on the House floor
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) issued the following statement after a successful floor debate opposing H.R. 2925 – the Mining Regulatory Clarity Act:
“Pro-polluter, pro-industry Republicans tried to take mining regulations back 100 more years and do more harm to our public lands. Today, they failed,” said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01). “As we move to the clean energy future, we cannot repeat the shortsightedness and injustices of the past. Americans want better management of our public lands, so they are protected and accessible, and not used as toxic waste dumpsites.”
The failure of H.R. 2925 was the first time this Congress that a Motion To Recommit passed, sending a bill back to the relevant Committee for further consideration. Six Republicans joined House Democrats to defeat the Mining Regulatory Clarity Act through what Ranking Member Grijalva called “a procedural embarrassment.”
“The House Republican Conference made it clear – once again – that they are willing to put profits over people by voting on six destructive bills,” Rep. Stansbury said. “Our status quo of prioritizing pro-polluter, extractive activities was never what public land management was supposed to look like.
“New Mexicans and Westerners know our cultures, economies, and futures are tied to permanent protections for our most special places and sustainable management of the lands we use.”
The six bills debated on the House floor this week were:
H.R. 3195
H.R.764 and H.R. 615
H.R. 3397
H.R. 2925
H.R. 6285
The five other bills passed the House.
