Rep. Stansbury Issues Statement on Memorial Day

May 28, 2023

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) issued the following statement recognizing New Mexico and the nation’s fallen servicemembers ahead of Memorial Day:

“On this Memorial Day, we honor the sacrifice that our service members have made for our country and our democracy. New Mexico has a long and proud tradition of military service—from Navajo Code Talkers to the heroes of Bataan, to the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, I want to recognize every New Mexican who has served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, our democracy and ideals that this nation was founded on, including that all people are created equal and that every person deserves the right to pursue happiness and opportunity.

“Every day we have a responsibility to renew our commitment to our service members and their families. From veterans’ legislation like the Honoring Our PACT Act to resources for Gold Star families, we must make good on our promises to those who have served. This Memorial Day, I join New Mexicans to remember and honor our fallen service members and commit to carry on their service to this great nation.”

Rep. Stansbury has been a leader on veterans’ issues in New Mexico and helped pass the landmark Honoring Our PACT Act in 2022 to expand health care for over 3.5 million veterans exposed to toxic chemicals in the line of duty. Last year, she also secured funding to help build the first all-veteran transitional housing program in New Mexico’s history and joined the delegation in working to make sure New Mexico’s rural VA clinics would remain open.
