Rep. Stansbury Issues Statement Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

January 16, 2023

ALBUQUERQUE—Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) issued the following statement:

“On this day honoring Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we must continue to carry his life’s work forward. In the face of racism and deep injustice, Dr. King helped organize a coalition in a nonviolent struggle for voting rights, economic justice, and full equality for Black Americans. Today, in the face of restrictive voting laws in states across the country, attacks on the Voting Rights Act, widening economic inequality, and assaults on our democratic institutions, we must draw on the lessons that Dr. King and his allies taught our nation. We must continue to organize for justice and continue the work. In Congress, I am committed to passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the Freedom To Vote Act, and racial justice legislation that carries on Dr. King’s legacy.”

Rep. Stansbury is additionally attending Albuquerque’s Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Breakfast and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of New Mexico’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Celebration Luncheon.

Rep. Stansbury cosponsored the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and helped pass the Freedom To Vote Actin the 117th Congress. In partnership with the New Mexico Black Leadership Council, she secured $125,000 for the organization’s youth programming initiatives in Albuquerque’s International District.
