Rep. Stansbury Introduces Medicare for All Act

May 17, 2023

WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) joined Representative Pramila Jayapal (Wash.-07) and dozens of Members of Congress to introduce the Medicare for All Act.

The Medicare for All Act expands on Medicare to cover every American. This expansion includes not just primary care, but vision and dental, prescription costs, mental health and substance abuse treatment, reproductive care, long-term care, and more.

“Health care is a human right,” Rep. Stansbury said. “It is time Congress finally passes the Medicare for All Act and gives Americans access to high quality, affordable healthcare. We have made incredible progress with the Affordable Care Act and the Inflation Reduction Act—it is time to fulfill our obligation to our communities and pass universal health care.”

The Inflation Reduction Act, passed last year, has already been a tremendous help for New Mexicans. Across the state 40,000 people were able to keep their free or low-cost healthcare plans, and in tandem with the American Rescue Plan, brought the national uninsured rate to a record low of 8 percent while capping annual prescription drug costs at $2,000 for seniors on Medicare.

The Medicare for All Act also allows patients to choose their hospitals, doctors, and other providers without having to worry about what is in-network. The bill also covers long-term care for the elderly and those with disabilities. It will also help with rising drug prices and reduce the cost of administrative expenses.
