Roundtable addresses gaps in housing accessibility in state

ALBUQUERQUE—Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) held a roundtable and resource fair Monday focused on addressing the gaps in housing accessibility in communities across the First Congressional District of New Mexico.

"Housing instability and the lack of available and affordable housing is deeply personal for me. We must think about housing as life-saving, necessary infrastructure in our communities so they can thrive for generations," said Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01). "There is no reason our families and residents should be one paycheck away from losing their homes or be operating with no safety net. These roundtables are important because there are so many creative solutions to helping communities in our state - it is time we figure out how to bring them together."

The National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) shows in New Mexico:

  • There is a shortage of approximately 41,000 rental homes that are available and affordable to extremely low income (ELI) renters.
  • 28% of renter households that are extremely low income
  • 70% of extremely low-income renter households with severe cost burden

In 2022, NLIHC data shows there were 68,160 ELI renter households in the state with only 27,270 affordable and available rental homes.

CONGRESSWOMAN STANSBURY’S WORK ON FINDING HOUSING ACCESSIBILITY SOLUTIONS:

Legislative Actions:

  • The Congresswoman is working closely with local tribal leaders to address concerns regarding a lack of Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA) funding to tribal communities in the district.
  • She is currently working on addressing these concerns by introducing legislation to create a separate stream of grant funding for tribal communities to build or rehabilitate existing homes with sustainable and resilient features.

Co-Sponsorships:

  • Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2023 (H.R.3238)
  • Expansion of Attainable Homeownership Through Manufactured Housing Act of 2023 (H.R.5198)
  • Eviction Protection Act of 2023 (H.R.5816)
  • Housing for All Act of 2023 (H.R.5254)
