Rep. Stansbury Cosponsors Legislation to Protect Health Care Providers, Patients, and Clinics

January 24, 2023

The Health Care Providers’ Safety Act of 2023 would strengthen safety protections for abortion providers and patients.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) signed on as a cosponsor to legislation led by U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar (Texas-16) to establish a grant program for healthcare providers to enhance the physical and cyber security of their facilities, personnel, and patients.

“As House Republicans renew their attacks on our fundamental reproductive freedoms, our health care providers and those seeking care across the nation are facing threats and violence at the hands of extremists,” said Rep. Stansbury. “I’m proud to stand with health care providers across the nation to support them with the protections they need to continue to provide abortion services and reproductive health care to our communities. We won’t go back.”

Initially introduced during the 117th Congress, the Healthcare Providers’ Safety Act of 2023 (H.R. 286) would amend the Public Health Service Act to allow the Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to be used by health care providers to pay for the costs of necessary security services and enhancements including cameras, data privacy enhancements, and structural improvements.

Rep. Stansbury joined 106 fellow Members of Congress to cosponsor the legislation, which is supported by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, URGE: United for Reproductive & Gender Equality, the National Women’s Law Center, National Abortion Federation, Catholics for Choice, the National Partnership for Women & Families, the Feminist Majority Foundation, and the National Council of Jewish Women.
