Rep. Stansbury Appointed to High-Profile House Oversight Committee
Rep. Stansbury joins high-profile committee responsible for investigating federal waste, fraud, and abuse under the leadership of Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (Md.-08), plan to continue to defend the rule of law, demand accountability, and uphold our democratic institutions.
WASHINGTON—Today, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.-08) appointed U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) to serve on the high-profile and prestigious House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, a key post in the oversight of government accountability and transparency, representing the people of New Mexico.
Rep. Stansbury will serve under the leadership of and alongside Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (Md.-08) and help carry out the Committee’s mission as the main investigative committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. On the Committee, Rep. Stansbury will serve as the front line in defense of our nation’s democratic institutions, the rule of law, government accountability, and truth, as members of the new GOP minority have vowed to use the Committee to pursue conspiracy theories and spread disinformation and election denialism. The Committee has authority to investigate any matter within the jurisdiction of the other standing House Committees involving waste, fraud, and abuse by the government.
“I am humbled and proud to represent New Mexico on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability as we work to protect and defend our democracy and the progress we made for our communities and the American people in Congress and the Administration over the last two years,” said Rep. Stansbury. “Throughout my public policy career, I have been a leader in good government, transparency, and the modernization of our institutions. Defending our democracy and the rule of law, while doing so, has never been more important. And, I am proud to join Ranking Member Raskin and my fellow Committee members on the front lines in holding the House majority accountable to basic truth, facts, and the values that New Mexicans and all Americans hold dear.”
Rep. Stansbury brings years of experience in federal and state institutional oversight, including nearly seven years as a staffer in the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and in the United States Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (ENR). During her service at OMB and ENR, she conducted oversight over billions of dollars in federal spending and programs and helped vet public officials for Senate confirmation proceedings. As a state legislator in the New Mexico House of Representatives, Rep. Stansbury helped lead efforts to modernize the nation’s last volunteer citizen legislature and reform state management and budgeting practices to root out corruption, abuses by special interests, and improve public transparency and participation.
