Congresswoman Stansbury’s Statement Honoring Muhammad Afzaal Hussain

August 3, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) released the following statement:

“I am devastated and heartbroken by the news that our community has lost Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, a beloved son and brother, urban planner, and shining light, to senseless gun violence. For those who knew Muhammad, his smile and passion lit up a room. I was fortunate enough to have the privilege of working with Muhammad during our Campaign for Congress, where his work as a field organizer for our campaign inspired countless people with his compassion and dedication to working in partnership with our communities, and as one of the kindest and hardest-working people I have ever known.

“New Mexico is lucky that Muhammad chose our state as his home after immigrating from Pakistan. His contributions to our communities stretch beyond what we can say here. As a dedicated urban planner for Española, he was committed to making our public spaces work for every person and cleaning up legacy pollution. Our team was privileged every day to witness firsthand Muhammad’s passion for lifting up the voices of our community members and celebrating their contributions, accomplishments, and dreams.

“I stand with Muhammad and his loving family and the Muslim community across New Mexico as we mourn and celebrate his life. Myself and our office will be doing everything we can to assist during this difficult time. As we honor Muhammad, we commit ourselves to honoring his life’s work to make this community a safer and more compassionate place. We must carry his light and his memory forward by working for justice and practicing loving kindness in everything we do.”
