Congresswoman Stansbury Urges the Supreme Court to Uphold Roe v. Wade

December 1, 2021

Rep. Stansbury joined members of the Democratic Women’s Caucus and advocates on the steps of the Supreme Court to support reproductive rights.

WASHINGTON—As the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case that could determine the future of Roe v. Wade and abortion rights nationwide, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) joined members of Congress and reproductive justice advocates on the Court steps to defend the constitutional right of abortion. Rep. Stansbury released the following statement:

“Reproductive justice is on the line today, as the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that could determine the future of Roe v. Wade and abortion rights across the country. We cannot go back to a dark time when women could not access care. Many states are already passing extreme abortion bans, limiting access, and endangering the health and safety of communities across the United States. This is about the safety, self-determination, and ability of every woman and every person to make decisions about their own body, their own healthcare, and their own future. This case represents the most significant threat to reproductive rights in decades, which is why we are also fighting to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify these rights in statute, and why it is crucial that the Senate urgently pass this legislation.”

In September, Rep. Stansbury joined the House of Representatives in passing the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify Roe v Wade in federal statute. Rep. Stansbury is a co-sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act and joined 236 lawmakers from the House and Senate in filing a bicameral amicus brief in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case that is being heard before the Supreme Court today.
