Congresswoman Stansbury Hosts Roundtable With Working Families on Historic Child Tax Credit

Child Tax Credit deposits are already arriving in New Mexico families’ bank accounts
ALBUQUERQUE – Today, Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) hosted a roundtable with OLÉ New Mexico and working families on the importance of the American Rescue Plan’s expanded Child Tax Credit. The American Rescue Plan established the largest-ever Child Tax Credit to provide monthly support for working families across the U.S..
In New Mexico’s First Congressional District, which includes the Albuquerque metro area and surrounding communities, over 42,600 families will receive the expanded Child Tax Credit, including 90.4% of children in the district. And, it is estimated that this expanded Child Tax Credit will lift 9,200 children in the district out of poverty.
“The American Rescue Plan shows what we can do when we invest in our communities and our families. This Child Tax Credit will help transform opportunities for New Mexico families by making the largest single investment in children and working families in generations,” said Congresswoman Stansbury. “Starting with today’s payment, families across the state will have more money each month to put food on the table, pay the bills, and support child care, housing and other needs. Investing in our kids and their well-being is an investment in our future—and one of my priorities in Congress is making sure we make the Child Tax Credit permanent.”
“Women, and especially women of color, have experienced disproportionate job losses as a result of the pandemic, largely because of lack of access to childcare. The Child Tax Credit will help those mothers and their families get back on their feet and will help many New Mexico parents be able to afford necessities. OLE members are looking forward to sharing their experiences and discussing the new tax credit with Congresswoman Stansbury,” said Melissa Martinez, OLÉ Member.
New Mexico has long ranked among the top states for childhood poverty with far-reaching implications for child wellbeing. The Child Tax Credit will go a long way in helping to address the needs of New Mexico’s children and families.
