Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury Statement on Republican Funding Deal to Reopen Government

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) released the following statement after voting “no” on the Republican funding deal:
“Simply put, this is a raw deal for Americans that does not address the Republican healthcare crisis. Not only does it let premiums skyrocket—putting healthcare out of reach for millions of Americans—but it also rewards eight Republican senators implicated in the January 6 insurrection with millions of dollars in self-dealing payouts.
While Donald Trump let millions of families across America go hungry during this shutdown, he spent his time expediting kickbacks for billionaires, a $40 billion bailout for Argentina, demolition of the White House’s East Wing, lavish parties and golfing at Mar-A-Lago, and trying to cover up the Epstein Files. And instead of working to find a bipartisan path forward—he’s pushed a domestic policy agenda that decimates healthcare and food assistance for millions of Americans and an illegal tariff scheme is that driving inflation, job loss, and increased costs of basic necessities.
Our democracy demands that we cannot allow these abuses of power to go unchecked. So, while I am grateful to see our government reopen and our federal workers being paid, we must continue to fight for the American people. Our battle is just beginning, and we will not stop until every American has access to healthcare, food, and basic human dignity.”
